Sometimes when you work in advertising, you’ll get a product that is really garbage, and you have to make it seem fantastic, something that is essential to the continued quality of life. This takes a great toll. The men could be good-looking with gorgeous body. It was like Jerry Springer meets medical school. In one scene after burdoughs quit drinking he describes emptying a bottle of scotch into the toilet: Names have been changed, characters combined, and events compressed. I gave this book two stars instead of one for this reason: I almost felt sorry for him at different times, but then he always ended up trying to pick himself up and recover.

In Burroughs’ case, this includes friends like Jim the undertaker, who parties hard every night. I think that Burroughs’ goal in writing this memoir and likely his other memoirs, augussten I have not read them nor do I have any intention of reading them now is to yank an emotional reaction from his audience. Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk is a near-perfect success both as a grand statement of solidarity and as a gorgeously wrought, long-overdue story of black life and black love.
