Well, Sheehy is in her 50s now and encountering some rough waters, so she’s added a few more stagesthe Flaming Fifties, the Uninhibited Eightiesto her earlier scenario. Her latest book, Sex and the Seasoned Woman, reveals a hidden cultural phenomenon: An aging woman goes to the Amazon once a year to search out new medicinal plants.
It should be a great session. It is fascinating to see her aging herself and continuing her research on life passages. The skill set of being “graceful” or “gracious” are nowhere to be found. Do you work in the book industry?

Rather than describing the bigger issues of life we all go through this book seemed very heavily focused on activistic and political v I read Gail Sheehy’s original ‘passages’ about 3 years ago and found that despite how old the book was and how much the world has changed it was still topical.

People are taking longer to grow up and much nee to grow old. If you’re young yet, don’t bother, but if you’re looking ahead and the road looks shorter than the one unspooling out behind you, then it’s a great investment of time. The book calls it a transition from survival to master—so now you can be the real you instead of whomever you needed to be to please all those people to get ahead. She conducted hundreds of interviews and small passgaes discussions and people jumped at the chance to talk about the changes in their lives as many were as puzzled as I was—at every stage of life.
