I did not find Gordon-Reed to be particularly angry, although, God knows, people of African American heritage have every right to be angry about so much of this country’s history.

A good part of the book is just speculation. The only real drawback to this book–and I hesitate to call it a drawback since, given the research that went into it, it is probably inevitable–is that it is quite dense.
More than concrete evidence, what this book was really missing was a decent editor with a ruthless red pen.
